El color de la madera varía del pardo oscuro al pardo rojizo y la albura es blanco-gris o blanco-amarillo. Puede presentar finas estrías de color más claro. La madera de albura está claramente diferenciada y en la madera en rollo ocupa un espesor de 1 a 2 cm. Madera Pesada con una densidad de 940 Kg./m3 al 15% de humedad. La fibra puede ser recta o entrelazada. El grano es medio.
Madera de color violáceo, con vetas de contornos difuminados más oscuras, también moradas. Presenta fibra recta y grano fino. Es dura, pesada, oleosa y con perfume a violetas (cfr. madera de palisandro y de jacarandá). Su uso se extendió en el siglo XVIII para chapeados, en particular en París, decayendo con posterioridad. Se emplea también en tallas, torneados y para fabricar instrumentos musicales. El palo violeta ("Dalbergia cearensis") es un árbol de la familia de las Leguminosas. Crece en América del Sur, particularmente en Brasil noroccidental.
