Se trata de una madera clara, incluso blanquecina, y muy homogénea. La madera de haya natural con el tiempo adquiere cierta tonalidad rojiza-amarilla, pero sigue siendo bastante blanca. Es muy frecuente someterla a un proceso de vaporizado que la oscurece alcanzado tonos rojizos anaranjados. Es lo que se conoce como madera de haya vaporizada, y son muchos los que piensan que este es el color natural.
Es una madera pesada, por encima de 700 kg/m3 y semi-dura.
Se pudre fácilmente en contacto con la humedad y es sensible al ataque de insectos y hongos.Poro fino y disperso. Fibra recta.
Madera de color violáceo, con vetas de contornos difuminados más oscuras, también moradas. Presenta fibra recta y grano fino. Es dura, pesada, oleosa y con perfume a violetas (cfr. madera de palisandro y de jacarandá). Su uso se extendió en el siglo XVIII para chapeados, en particular en París, decayendo con posterioridad. Se emplea también en tallas, torneados y para fabricar instrumentos musicales. El palo violeta ("Dalbergia cearensis") es un árbol de la familia de las Leguminosas. Crece en América del Sur, particularmente en Brasil noroccidental.
También conocida como Sucupira, es una madera que se encuentra en la zona tropical de América del Sur.
El color de la madera varía del pardo oscuro al pardo rojizo y la albura es blanco-gris o blanco-amarillo. Puede presentar finas estrías de color más claro. La madera de albura está claramente diferenciada y en la madera en rollo ocupa un espesor de 1 a 2 cm. Madera Pesada con una densidad de 940 Kg./m3 al 15% de humedad. La fibra puede ser recta o entrelazada. El grano es medio.
Es una variedad de tela plastificada, sustituto de piel y microfibra para corte y forro, en la fabricación de productos de la industria textil.
