La esfalerita es un mineral compuesto por sulfuro de zinc (ZnS) que anteriormente era conocida como blenda de cinc o blenda acaramelada. Es un mineral semiduro y pesado, perfectamente exfoliable y de fractura irregular a concoidea. Su color es variable según la especie, esto es, desde tonalidades amarillo-verdosas hasta pardo-rojizas pero con un denominador común, su ennegrecimiento en función de la proporción de hierro (sobretodo), manganeso o cadmio que contenga.
El talco es un mineral de color blanco a gris azul que en la escala de Mohs se toma como patrón de la menor dureza posible, asignándosele convencionalmente el valor. El tacto resulta tan grasiento, untoso o jabonoso que recuerda al jaboncillo de costurera y puede rayarse con la uña. De las cloritas microcristalinas se distingue por ser insoluble en ácidos, mientras que de la pirofilita hay que recurrir a rayos X o mediante su humectación con una disolución de nitrato de cobalto, ya que al calentarlo posteriormente se tornará violeta pálido, mientras que la pirofilita daría color azul.
