La piedra pómez es una roca volcánica vesicular que suele ser lo suficientemente ligera como para flotar en el agua. Normalmente tiene una composición química similar a la riolita (o su contrapartida plutónica, el granito), aunque el magma de virtualmente cualquier composición puede formar a la piedra pómez. El término vesicular se refiere a la presencia de vesículas, o cavidades de forma irregular, las cuales producen una textura esponjosa o burbujeante y de muy baja densidad en rocas volcánicas.
Las serpentinas constituyen un grupo de minerales que se caracterizan por no presentarse en forma de cristales, excepto en el caso de pseudomorfismo. Son productos de alteración de ciertos silicatos magnésicos, especialmente olivino, piroxenos y anfíboles. Existen tres formas polimorfas que cristalizan en el sistema monoclínico: la lizardita, la antigorita y el crisotilo. Las dos últimas poseen, además, polimorfos ortorrómbicos.
