El mármol es una roca metamórfica compacta formada a partir de rocas calizas que, sometidas a elevadas temperaturas y presiones, alcanzan un alto grado de cristalización. El componente básico del mármol es el carbonato cálcico, cuyo contenido supera el 90 por ciento; los demás componentes son los que dan gran variedad de colores en los mármoles y definen sus características físicas. Tras un proceso de pulido por abrasión el mármol alcanza alto nivel de brillo natural, es decir, sin ceras ni componentes químicos.
La piedra pómez es una roca volcánica vesicular que suele ser lo suficientemente ligera como para flotar en el agua. Normalmente tiene una composición química similar a la riolita (o su contrapartida plutónica, el granito), aunque el magma de virtualmente cualquier composición puede formar a la piedra pómez. El término vesicular se refiere a la presencia de vesículas, o cavidades de forma irregular, las cuales producen una textura esponjosa o burbujeante y de muy baja densidad en rocas volcánicas.
La Marmatita es una variedad de la esfalerita, está compuesta por sulfuro de Zinc. Por su aspecto se confunde con la galena. Es la principal mena de zinc. En masas fibrosas o compactas son frecuentes las maclas. Su contenido en hierro es alto.
El yeso es un mineral compuesto de sulfato de calcio hidratado. El yeso mineral cristaliza en el sistema monoclínico, en cristales de hábito prismático; tabular paralelo al segundo pinacoide; de forma rómbica con aristas biseladas en las caras. Se presenta en cristales, a veces grandes, maclados en punta de flecha y en punta de lanza; también en masas y agregados espáticos. Con frecuencia fácilmente exfoliable (selenita); puede ser sacaroideo y translúcido (alabastro), incoloro, blanco, o de distintos colores, grisáceo, amarillento, rojizo o incluso negro, dependiendo de las inclusiones que contenga.
El carbón o carbón mineral es una roca sedimentaria organogenia de color negro, muy rica en carbono y con cantidades variables de otros elementos, principalmente hidrógeno, azufre, oxígeno y nitrógeno, utilizada como combustible fósil. La mayoría del carbón explotado se formó a partir de los vegetales que crecieron durante los períodos Carbonífero. Es un recurso no renovable.
La cuprita es un mineral del grupo de los óxidos. Químicamente es un óxido cuproso de color rojo que suele estar alterado superficialmente en malaquita verdosa. La variedad calcotriquita toma aspecto de agregado de cristales capilares largos. Es un mineral secundario, que se forma en la zona de oxidación de los depósitos de otros minerales de cobre, por lo que frecuentemente aparece asociado al cobre nativo.
La pirrotina es un mineral que debe su nombre al color rojizo o rosado que presenta. Tiene una composición química similar a la de la troilita, un sulfuro de hierro que se encuentra únicamente en los meteoritos. Sinónimo de pirrotina es pirita magnética, denominación que alude a una característica especial que presenta este mineral, es decir, a su fuerte magnetismo. Se forma, por cristalización antes de la consolidación de las rocas eruptivas básicas y ultrabásicas y se concentra posteriormente a causa de su elevado peso específico.
Químicamente es un disulfuro de hierro y cobre metalizado, de la clase 2 de los minerales. Los cristales son pseudotetraedros, corrientemente con recubrimiento de tetraedrita o tennantita. La mayoría de las veces se la encuentra en forma masiva y las pocas veces que se ven los cristales están muy maclados y aplanados. Forma una serie de minerales de solución sólida. Puede formarse y encontrarse en: rocas pegmatitas neumatolíticas, rocas hidrotermales de alta temperatura.
El aragonito o aragonita es una de las formas cristalinas del carbonato de calcio (CaCO3). Puede encontrarse en forma de estalactitas, y también en la concha de casi todos los moluscos y en el esqueleto de los corales. Entre las variedades del aragonito destaca la llamada flos-ferri (flor de hierro), que se asemeja a un coral.
La calcantita, chalcantita, calclasa o chalclasa, es un mineral del grupo VI (sulfatos) según la clasificación de Strunz, se la conoce por ser extremadamente soluble en el agua (hecho que explica que solamente se encuentre de forma natural en zonas de clima muy seco), acumular bastante polvo y proporcionar al paladar un gusto metálico. Es levemente tóxica.
La wolframita o volframita es un grupo de minerales de la clase de los minerales óxidos. Su nombre podría venir del antiguo alemán "wolf" y "ram" (espuma de lobo), en alusión a la sustancia cremosa que se forma durante la metalurgia del wolframio. Se encuentra a menudo junto con cuarzo, en pegmatitas graníticas y como depósito hidrotermal. Este mineral es duro y pesado y sus matices pueden ir del negro al pardo oscuro, con algunos destellos rojizos.
La malaquita es un mineral del grupo V (carbonatos) según la clasificación de Strunz. Posee un 57,0% de cobre. Su nombre viene del griego malaqh, que significa ‘malva’, en alusión a su color verde. En la naturaleza la encontramos en pequeños cristales, en forma masiva o formando estalactitas. Frecuentemente se encuentra como pseudomorfismo de la azurita.
